NAIROBI (Kyodo) -- Toyota Motor Corp. was forced Wednesday to suspend production at its Durban plant in eastern South Africa as a result of a strike by workers at a local supplier demanding higher wages, local reports said.
According to the South African Press Association, workers launched a strike at a Toyota Boshoku Corp. plant that mainly makes auto seats. Reuters quoted a Toyota spokesman as saying production at the Durban plant is unlikely to resume as long as the strike continues.
In South Africa, labor unrest is spreading after 34 miners were killed during a clash with police in August.
Toyota's Durban plant was also forced to halt production earlier this month due to a strike by workers at the plant.
