Freight Train Carrying Corn Syrup Derails

The cause remains under investigation.

A freight train traveling through Arizona left the track Wednesday, the latest in a series of high-profile rail incidents in recent weeks.

The latest derailment, however, appears to pose little danger to the surrounding area.

Authorities in Mohave County had initially feared that the train was carrying hazardous materials, the Associated Press reported.

But BNSF Railway said it was, in fact, carrying corn syrup when it derailed near the border with California.

BNSF said no one was injured, and the local sheriff’s office said there was no evidence of a spill or leak.

The main track was blocked during the incident, and will remain so for an indeterminate amount of time.

The cause of the derailment remains under investigation.
