GREATER NOIDA, India (Kyodo) -- Honda Motor Co. said Wednesday its motorcycle unit in India will invest 11 billion Indian rupees (about 17.8 billion yen) to open a new manufacturing plant in the northwestern part of the country in 2015.
The new plant in Ahmedabad in Gujarat state will be the fourth base in India for the Japanese maker and initially have an annual production capacity of 1.2 million units, Honda said.
With the enhanced annual production capacity of 5.8 million units in India, Honda aims to reach top spot in the country's market. The Japanese manufacturer now ranks second in market share behind its former joint venture partner Hero group of India.
