GM to Build Assembly Plant in Mexico

General Motors has announced plans to build a car-assembly plant in the central Mexican state of San Luis Potosi.

Construction is expected to begin in May or June with completion expected in 2008.

The plant will employ 1,800 to 2,300 workers, and will build compact and subcompact vehicles, though GM has not identified the models.

According to an article in the Detroit Free Press, GM is the market-share leader in Mexico, and is expected to invest as much as $650 million in the new facility.

GM said it had no plans to export any of the cars it builds at the new plant to the U.S. Currently, the automaker builds some Chevrolet Silverado pickups and Chevrolet Suburban and GMC Yukon XL large SUVs in Mexico, as well as the U.S.
