Hot Sauce Brand Sues Contract Manufacturer Over Bottles 'Exploding’

The company sells its sauces in some of the nation’s largest retail chains.

A salsa and hot sauce company in Iowa has sued a contract manufacturer over a series of alleged quality control issues in recent years — including hot sauce bottles that reportedly exploded.

Lola’s Fine Sauces, which began at farmer’s markets and now sells in many of the nation’s top grocery chains, partnered with Canadian manufacturer EcoIdeas Innovation in 2023 for production of "mini bottles” of salsa, the Iowa Capital Dispatch reported.

A breach of contract lawsuit filed by the company alleged that problems with those products began the following year, including issues that forced Walmart to pull items from shelves. Then, in 2025, the suit said that the company received a flood of complaints about taste issues, discoloration, and bottles that were "bubbling, exploding and fermenting.”

The complaint suggested that EcoIdeas used incorrect bottle filling processes and filling temperatures, and added the manufacturer has not reimbursed it for any costs as promised, instead claiming that it "has no insurance coverage.”

All told, attorneys wrote that the problems resulted in some $700,000 in losses for Lola’s, along with harm to its reputation and problems with lost inventory and retailer chargebacks.

EcoIdeas, the Dispatch reported, has not filed a response to the lawsuit, and attempts to reach the company and its attorneys were reportedly unsuccessful.
