WATERFORD, Conn. (AP) — Connecticut's nuclear plant has shut down one of its units for 48 hours due to equipment failure.
Unit 2 of Millstone Power Station was down when a turbine tripped due to a loss of a condenser vacuum. The equipment helps move steam through the turbine, to increase efficiency.
Ken Holt, a spokesman for the Dominion Resources Inc.-owned plant, said a bad relay caused the problem and shut off the pump, which automatically shut down Unit 2. The relay has since been replaced.
The Nuclear Regulatory Commission said there were no complications following the reactor shutdown.
Last August, Millstone shut Unit 3 automatically when an instrument failure caused a drop in the level of water used to cool the reactor core.
