Italian tire manufacturer Pirelli plans to invest approximately $1.2 billion to expand a facility at its U.S. headquarters in Rome, Ga. The company expects the project to increase the factory's annual production capacity to 6 million car tires and create nearly 1,000 jobs.
Pirelli said the expansion will begin in 2027, with completion scheduled for 2033. The company has operated in Georgia since 2002.
“The U.S. is one of Pirelli’s most important markets and offers significant opportunities for growth,” Pirelli North America CEO Claudio Zanardo said. “The expansion of our Rome facility strengthens our ‘local for local’ strategy, increasing our manufacturing capacity in the U.S. while introducing the latest-generation technologies, such as the Cyber Tire and advanced robotics.”
The Rome expansion will take place in two phases, with the first gradually increasing production using the latest evolution of Pirelli's proprietary technology. The company expects production to progressively increase beginning in 2028 and eventually reach 3 million tires annually through autonomous modular robotic systems.
Pirelli also plans to build a fully automated conventional production facility, which will add another 3 million tires per year once fully operational.
Senior Regional Project Manager Lori Dowdy represented the Georgia Department of Economic Development’s (GDEcD) Global Commerce team on this competitive project in partnership with the Rome-Floyd Development Authority, Georgia Quick Start and Georgia Power.
