The maker of Buffalo Trace and Eagle Rare bourbon indicated that it plans to spend more than $1 billion on a new whiskey barrel-aging campus in central Kentucky.

Sazerac, which owns numerous whiskey brands as well as the Southern Comfort and Fireball labels, purchased land in Taylor County to host new barrel warehouses, according to the Lexington Herald-Leader.

Documents from the state’s economic development authority outlined a total project cost of $1.02 billion.

Sazerac is poised to receive a tax incentive package worth $2.75 million from the Kentucky Economic Development Finance Authority to support the project; additional details, such as a construction timetable or project scope, were not available.

The campus would be just the latest barrel-aging hub built by Sazerac in the Bluegrass State – although the report noted that others drew opposition from neighboring residents over concerns about “whiskey fungus,” a black growth attributed to alcohol evaporating from barrelhouses.

The report came just days after Sazerac announced a $38 million project to expand production at a distillery in Indiana. The expansion is slated to create 25 new jobs at the facility in New Albany.
