Boeing Pours $450M into Self-Flying Car

Wisk plans to skip pilots entirely.

Boeing is investing hundreds of millions in a developer of autonomous electric air taxis.

Wisk, owned by Boeing and Google co-founder Larry Page’s Kitty Hawk Corp., disclosed $450 million in funding from the aerospace giant this week.

Wisk officials said the financing will help accelerate the development of its electric vertical-takeoff-and-landing vehicle.

Unlike other flying car initiatives around the world, Wisk plans to forego piloted flights in favor of completely self-flying vehicles.

The company says its prototype is a candidate to be the first autonomous flying vehicle certified in the U.S.

Industry sources told Reuters that the company plans to bring the vehicle to federal regulators in 2028.

Within five years of certification, Wisk wants to operate one of the largest flying taxi fleets in the world.

Its 20-city network would be able to carry more than 40 million passengers on 14 million flights per year.
