An environmental group filed a lawsuit against a pair of major automakers over what it says are insufficient efforts to curb their vehicles’ climate impact.
The complaints were filed last week against BMW and Daimler by the heads of German nonprofit Deutsche Umwelthilfe, Reuters reports.
The group previously gave a group of German car makers until Sept. 20 to commit to phasing out vehicles with internal-combustion engines by 2030.
The nonprofit based its legal argument on a landmark case involving oil and gas giant Shell.
A Dutch court earlier this year ruled that the company had a duty to meet the terms of the Paris climate agreement.
It ordered Shell to slash its emissions by nearly half by 2030.
Neither automaker has set an end date for gasoline-powered vehicles, but both said they are moving toward climate neutrality and support the Paris agreement.
