Sandwich Manufacturer Burns Down in Iowa

An excavator was brought in to separate the production facility from the freezer, which was saved in the effort.

On Saturday, Pride of Iowa’s food manufacturing facility burned to the ground in Marengo, Iowa.

The company is a 40-year-old, family-owned business that manufactures sandwiches, primarily for convenience stores, hospitals, schools, prisons and vending companies.

Firefighters struggled with the blaze, because the facility was recently remodeled, and the department never received an updated floor plan.

An excavator was brought in to separate the production facility from the freezer, which was saved in the effort.

However, the offices, production floor and warehouse are a total loss.

Local authorities are trying to determine the cause of the fire, but believe that it started in the office area.

The company has about 75 employees who make 600,000 sandwiches every week. The facility was closed when the fire broke out and no one was injured.

Operations are now at a standstill while the owners look for a temporary space. The plan is to rebuild the factory in Marengo.
