New Orleans, Louisiana — Justice Department attorneys are back in federal court presenting their case for making BP pay billions of dollars in civil penalties for the 2010 Gulf of Mexico oil spill.
The oil corporation, meanwhile, says the government is ignoring some of its own data on the health of the Gulf region nearly five years after the spill.
Trial on federal Clean Water Act penalties, which could hit $13.7 billion for BP, began Tuesday in New Orleans. It resumed Wednesday with testimony from environmental researcher Donald Boesch (Bosh). Boesch testified about observable damage to sea life as a result of the spill. He also discussed potential harm — findings that BP says are speculative and shouldn't be considered in the civil penalty phase.
The trial is expected to last three weeks.
