New MG Model Rolls Off UK Production Line

The MG6 is the first car to go into full-scale production since MG Rover collapsed in 2005, putting 6,300 people out of work and left creditors owing $2.1 billion.

LONDON (AP) -- The first new MG car model in 16 years has rolled off the production line in Britain.

The MG6 is the first car to go into full-scale production at a plant near Birmingham in England since MG Rover collapsed in 2005 -- putting 6,300 people out of work and left creditors owing 1.3 billion pounds ($2.1 billion).

The MG brand is now owned by the Shanghai Automotive Industry Corp. -- China's largest carmaker.

The new model was designed in Britain with parts made in China and then shipped to Britain for assembly at the Longbridge plant.

The first of the new MG6 model was driven off the production line Wednesday by the plant's only female worker among its 400 employees.

The collapse of MG Rover, Britain's largest remaining car manufacturing company, six years ago caused a public outcry.
