Volkswagen Deliveries Above 7 Million Units

Automaker said Monday that its sales rose by 13.5 percent in 2010, as demand in China and the U.S. helped drive deliveries above 7 million units for the first time.

BERLIN (AP) -- Volkswagen AG said Monday that its sales rose by 13.5 percent in 2010, as demand in China and the U.S. helped drive deliveries above 7 million units for the first time.

Volkswagen said its group deliveries totaled 7.14 million last year, up from 6.29 million a year earlier.

The group, which includes brands such as Audi, Skoda and Seat, reported an even stronger rise in December. Sales last month totaled 545,000 cars -- an increase of 22.8 percent over December 2009.

Volkswagen's full-year sales in China rose 37.4 percent to 1.92 million cars. U.S. deliveries rose 20.9 percent to 360,300.

Deliveries in western Europe, excluding Volkswagen's German home market, increased 11.6 percent to 1.85 million. In Germany, they were down 16.8 percent to 1.04 million -- suffering from comparison with 2009, when sales benefited from a popular government car-scrapping bonus scheme.

Volkswagen saw a huge increase in demand in India, where 2010 sales soared 181 percent to 53,500.
