Sanofi-Aventis Claims Plavix Is Safe

French drug maker says its blockbuster drug Plavix is safe, a day after European regulators ordered recall of generic brands of the blood thinner's active ingredient.

PARIS (AP) -- Sanofi-Aventis SA says that its blockbuster drug Plavix is safe, a day after European regulators ordered a recall of generic brands of the blood thinner's active ingredient.

The French drug maker said in a statement Friday that it makes all of its drugs containing the ingredient, clopidogrel, in Europe and that the drugs are not concerned by the recall ordered by the European Medicines Agency.

On Thursday, the EMA recommended a recall of generic versions of drugs containing clopidogrel produced in an Indian factory that failed to meet good manufacturing standards.

Plavix is the world's second best-selling drug.

The European Medicines Agency is a regulatory body for the European Union.
