Oregon Governor Aims To Attract Electric Cars

Chinese and Japanese manufacturers are looking to assemble their e-cars in North America, says Gov. Ted Kulongoski, and he'd like Oregon to be the place to do it.

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) -- Gov. Ted Kulongoski says he wants electric cars to be assembled in Oregon.

He has scheduled a trade trip to Japan and China in late November to talk to Toyota and Chinese car manufacturer BYD.

The Chinese and Japanese manufacturers are looking to assemble their e-cars in North America, he says, and he'd like Oregon to be the place to do it.

For that to happen, Kulongoski says, the state needs to provide battery-charging stations along major routes. He also says there would need to be tax incentives to get more people to buy the low- and no-emission cars.
