UK Manufacturing Output Lackluster, But Steady

Office for National Statistics paints a stable picture of the industry, despite the lack of shining stars for output.

LONDON - UK manufacturing remained steady this quarter, according to the Office for National Statistics said Thursday.

Output rose 0.6 percent from February to March. While there were no industries that outperformed, machinery and equipment output did better than most, rising 1.2 percent.

For the quarter, manufacturing output dipped 0.3 percent. Electricity, gas and water supply industries performed the best for the quarter, increasing output by 1.3 percent. Mining and quarrying also rose 1.3 percent over the previous quarter.

Consumer durable goods output dropped 2.7 percent compared to the previous quarter. Consumer nondurable goods output was down 0.7 percent.

Capital goods output was mostly unchanged over last quarter. Intermediate goods and energy industries output increased 0.7 percent.
