Japanese March Auto Production Drops After 17 Consecutive Increases

JAMA is reporting automobile production dropped 3.4 percent in March, as compared with the same period in 2006. This is the first drop after 17 consecutive increases.

JAPAN - The Japanese Automobile Manufacturer’s Association (JAMA) said automobile production in March totaled 1,080,188, a decrease of 3.4 percent from the same period in 2006. This is the first drop after 17 consecutive increases.

Meanwhile, domestic sales in March 2007 dropped as well, to 767,366 vehicles, compared with December 2006. This marked an 8.1 percent drop.

Overseas vehicle production by Japanese automakers in the fourth quarter of 2006 totaled 2,851,919 units, an increase of 2.2 percent over the same quarter from the previous year.
