Uber, Motional Launch Autonomous Vehicle Service in Las Vegas

The companies plan to expand the service to other major cities.

Uber and autonomous vehicle company Motional will offer customers the option to use autonomous vehicles in Las Vegas.

Customers can request a ride on the Uber app and be matched with a Motional autonomous vehicle.

If the rider accepts, Uber will send an autonomous all-electric IONIQ 5 robotaxi.

Vehicles still feature human “vehicle operators,” who monitor the technology.

However, the companies hope to launch the driverless service to the public next year.

The companies plan to expand the service to other major cities, including Los Angeles.

The development follows a 10-year commercial partnership between Uber and Motional announced in October.

The first launch between Uber and Motional used AVs to conduct deliveries for Uber Eats in LA.
