Rolls-Royce Announces First Fully Electric Car

The luxury automaker plans to phase out gas-powered cars by 2030.

Rolls-Royce Motor Cars made the announcement in a press release that all of its products will be fully electric by 2030.

In the same release, CEO Torsten Müller-Ötvös revealed Rolls-Royce’s first fully electric car.

Rolls-Royce said on-road testing of the electric vehicle, named Spectre, is “imminent” and the car will be on the market in Q4 of 2023.

With a simulation of 400 years of use, testing will stretch across 2.5 million kilometers in a wide variety of conditions and terrains.

This development follows 2011’s 102EX, a one-off electric prototype, and 2016’s fully electric 103EX, Rolls-Royce’s first vision vehicle.

Müller-Ötvös reflected on the company’s history with EVs, saying, “In 1900, [Charles Rolls] experienced an early electric motor car and declared its electric drive to be ideal.”

Rolls-Royce’s parent organization, BMW, has not disclosed a date for when it will cease the production of fossil fuel burning cars, Reuters reported.

Other brands that have set all-electric dates include Jaguar Land Rover, Bentley Motors and Daimler.
