Subsidies Make Some Cars Free in Germany

Some lessees are looking at car payments on par with their cell phone bills — or lower.

Amid an ailing auto market, some buyers are facing vehicle offers that are almost too good to be true.

According to Bloomberg, Germany and France offer some of the most generous subsidies for electric vehicles in the world.

In these countries, incentives designed to boost the car market mean some lessees are looking at car payments on par with their cell phone bills.

A dealership with 50 locations across Germany is now offering a lease on a Renault Zoe that is covered 100% by subsidies ... sort of.

The fine print on some offers details one-time, up-front payments, but the overall subsidy in Germany is up to $9,000 euros and can also include other rebates.

The dealership fielded 3,000 inquiries within a few weeks of posting the offer.

Other dealerships are advertising monthly payments of 39 euros per month for an electric car lease.

Aleksandra O’Donovan, an analyst with BloombergNEF, predicts that plummeting battery costs will mean electrics will be cheaper than gas vehicles as soon as the mid-2020s.
