BMW has set out to tackle one of the most significant downers for those who are suffering at the hands of a chauffeur – how to pour yourself a glass of Rose, or whatever legal liquid in a car, without spilling.
The luxury automaker has applied for a patent that fills your glass from the bottom up, not unlike the beer fillers you might see at a sporting venue or other commercial location. In beer sales, the technology is effective in improving yield by reducing foam due to “operator error” and also frees bartenders’ hands so they can better multitask.
According to AutoGuide.com, BMW’s system would work in much the same way. You could place your glass in the beverage holder – which is designed to be less prone to spillage to begin with – and push down. A complementary valve system would enable liquid to shoot up into the glass from below.
There are even two options for drinks so you could decide on the fly between your two favorite things – or mix them – without a drop on your upholstery. The patent application drawings show a champagne flute, so it’s likely these won’t be coming to your run-of-the-mill 3-Series, rather, BMW limousines are really any Rolls-Royce.
Up next, we can only hope, will be a wine-wicking, jewel-encrusted poncho, sewn with gold thread of course, for once you have the glass in your hand, it’s up to you to keep that Louis Vitton tie clean, just in case you’re photographed at the polo match.
