New generation of mobile devices empowers workers to be productive anywhere, anytime
In a recent AberdeenGroup survey on wireless adoption, smart phones were listed among the top two technologies businesses planned to adopt in 2008.
Manufacturers are being drawn to a particular type of phone that employs leading-edge technology called push-to-talk, which is often referred as the voice equivalent of instant messaging because it allows users to initiative live conversations with colleagues at will. Push-to-talk is a much more effective business tool than instant messaging, however, because it allows groups of workers to join impromptu discussions. Often, those discussions evolve into full-blown business conferences with group members exchanging documents, photos, and even video via their cell phones.

Manufacturers say lack of integration stalls efforts to mitigate skills shortage
A recent survey of manufacturers conducted by Manufacturing Business Technology saw near half of respondents say they blend workforce and production data to measure and manage key performance indicators (KPI), activity-based and labor costs, and overall equipment effectiveness.
To do so, however, respondents say they must pull data from multiple systems, and most say this work must be performed manually.
By failing to take advantage of the power of integrated data—or by achieving it with limited manual means—these manufacturers must be leaving money on the table through failing to understand true costs or unlock true labor-force value.
With manufacturers facing a growing and persistent skilled labor shortage, better understanding and scheduling of workforce capabilities is a clear and present need.
Tune into this MBT Executive podcast to learn how manufacturers perceive their own efforts to increase worker productivity through a better understanding of workforce data.
You’ll also be briefed on advanced capabilities of workforce management solutions in the three areas:

Time, attendance and activity trackingAutomated schedulingWorkforce analytics and reporting
To many professionals, the term “workforce management” is synonymous with time and attendance solutions. Know that today these systems extend far beyond traditional payroll and HR functionality to encompass “workforce planning, deployment, optimization, compliance, measurement, and development.”
Today’s most challenging business issues—from outsourcing to the “skills gap”—share the workforce as a common denominator. That means addressing labor-related issues to optimize workforce performance can deliver a sustainable competitive advantage.
