A strategic move: Sun moves into database market with purchase of open-source player MySQL Sun Microsystems has agreed to acquire MySQL AB, an open-source icon and developer of one of the world's fastest-growing open-source databases, for approximately $1 billion. The acquisition accelerates Sun's position in enterprise IT to now include the $15-billion database market. Economic indicators: Job numbers point to "the brink" of recession Faced with rising energy and material costs, along with the effects of the U.S. housing market downturn, some manufacturers and other types of companies have been forced to lay off part of their workforce. That number has grown quickly, too. And one economist says it means the economy is "on the brink of recession."
