News from Lexis NexisBritish Inventors Develop Secure Access Through Network Firewalls Providing Method
ALEXANDRIA, Va., May 9 -- Stephen J. Hinde of Redland, Great Britain, Lawrence Wilcock of Malmesbury, Great Britain, and Colin Low of Wooton-Under-Edge, Great Britain, have developed a method of providing secure access through network firewalls. California Inventor Develops Least-Recently-Used List Management Method
ALEXANDRIA, Va., May 9 -- Jan L. Bonebakker of Mountain View, Calif., has developed a method for managing a least-recently-used (LRU) list. According to the U.S. Patent & Trademark Office: "One embodiment of the present invention provides a system that manages an LRU list such that the rank, or position, of data records in the sequence can be determined efficiently. The system initializes an index field in each record to the record's initial rank. When a record is accessed, the system moves it to the beginning of the LRU list and appends the value of the record's index field to a 'change list'. The system then sets the record's index field to zero." Massachusetts Inventor Develops Data Copy Transferring Method
ALEXANDRIA, Va., May 9 -- John Cardente of Milford, Mass., has developed a method for transferring a copy of data. According to the U.S. Patent & Trademark Office, the invention relates to a "method for transferring a copy of data stored at a source to a remote location. The method includes storing at the source sequence of sets of changes in the data stored at the source. The method transfers to a first one of a pair of storage volumes at the remote location the most recent pair of the stored sets of changes in the sequence of data stored at the source at a time prior to such transfer." Japanese Inventors Develop Transmitted Information Processing Method

ALEXANDRIA, Va., May 9 -- Alexandra Fedorova of Lincoln, Mass., has developed a method for estimating a multithreaded processor. According to the U.S. Patent & Trademark Office: "An estimate is calculated of the throughput of a multi-threaded processor having N threads based on measured miss rates of a cache memory associated with the processor by calculating, based on the cache miss rates a probability that the processor is in a state with one thread running, a probability that the processor is in a state with two threads are running and continuing to a probability that the processor is in a state with N threads running, multiplying each probability by a measured throughput of the processor when it is in the corresponding state and summing the resulting products. This estimate may also be corrected for bus delays in transferring information between the cache memory and main memory. The estimate can be used for thread scheduling in a multiprocessor system." Minnesota Inventor Develops Memory Accessing System
ALEXANDRIA, Va., May 9 -- Paul S. Neuman of Shoreview, Minn., has developed a memory accessing method. According to the U.S. Patent & Trademark Office: "A system and method for dynamically accessing memory under normal operating conditions without interrupting computer system clocks that are otherwise executing. At least a memory access mode and a memory address(es) are scanned into a control scan chain from a maintenance system. When the scan is complete, the information is collectively transferred to an access register bank. Based on the control signals, a selection multiplexer selects the information from the control scan chain provided by the maintenance system as opposed to standard signals generated by the computer system. Memory control input signals are generated in response to a clock trigger signal, and the read or write data transfer is initiated." Georgia, Massachusetts Inventors Develop Data Storage System Volume Matrix
ALEXANDRIA, Va., May 9 -- Vincent H.Westin of Marietta, Ga., and David L. Black of Acton, Mass., have developed a data storage operations method. According to the U.S. Patent & Trademark Office: "A volume matrix is established including host devices on a host computer and virtual devices and logical devices on a data storage system. Each host device/virtual device (H/V) pair has a user-visible primary address range to serve as a primary H/V pair on a primary path for a logical device, and selected H/V pairs also have one or more user-hidden secondary address ranges to serve as secondary H/V pairs on secondary paths for other logical devices."
