US computer giant Dell's (Nasdaq: DELL) revenues in the Americas region fell 8% to $7US.2bn during the fiscal 2009 third quarter, ending October 31, the company said in a statement.

Unit shipments in the Americas region, which includes the US, Canada, and all of Latin America, also fell 14% during the quarter.

Global revenues fell 3% during the quarter, reaching $15US.2bn. Laptop and storage revenues were flat, while revenues from Dell's Global Consumer business increased 10%.

Revenues in the BRIC countries, Brazil, Russia, India and China, increased 20%, while shipments increased 43%.

Global net profits fell 5% to $727USmn.

Dell CEO Michael Dell said industry demand slowed sharply in October. Still, the company managed to diversify its sales during the quarter.

"We increased profitability with an improved mix of products and services - more than a third of our revenue and profit now comes from servers, storage, services and software and peripherals - and benefited from initiatives to improve our competiveness, including tight cost controls," he said.

Dell added that the company is continuing to focus on five growth areas: notebooks, enterprise, global consumer, small and medium business and emerging countries.

The company did not provide hard figures, but said that it would continue to incur costs as it realigns business units, reduces headcount, and makes new investments.
