Good deal: Web-based marketplace takes back, serves up surplus equipment and parts

By Staff -- Manufacturing Business Technology, 5/1/2008

Industrial repair and spare parts mark the sweet spot for Ann Arbor, Mich.-based SurplusTrack.com. A Web-based marketplace, SurplusTrack.com offers companies a way to remove surplus or obsolete parts both from their books and physical premises.

Brent Ray, president of SurplusTrack.com, says the growing Web marketplace offers services to companies seeking to remove surplus or obsolete parts both from their books and physical premises.

“We maintain a warehouse because many clients are looking for someone to quantify their goods and remove them from their floor space to keep them from getting intermingled with good inventory,” says Brent Ray, SurplusTrack.com president. “A lot of the material is brand new maintenance repair and spare parts, but because of changes in manufacturing processes, new equipment acquisitions, or a change in the product line, they don't need them anymore.”

Launched in September 2006 with more than 400 items, SurplusTrack.com now offers 100,000-plus items. The company just upgraded its interface in December with SurplusTrack.com 3.0 for greater ease of use, and more payment choices.

“Our search capabilities were becoming cumbersome, so we now use an appliance from Google and offer PayPal as a payment option,” Ray says.

The company works regularly with eight Fortune 1000 companies.

DuBois Production is an equipment systems integrator and contract manufacturer based in Comstock Park, Mich. It offers set-up services for welding cells, or in the event that a company doesn't want to make additional capital investments, DuBois does contract manufacturing in its own facility. DuBois added eight new welding lines in 2007, calling upon SurplusTrack.com to supply new equipment and parts at greatly reduced market prices.

“We do a lot of work for stamping companies that do welding and assembly of metal components for the automotive industry,” says T.J. DuBois, who directs purchasing and sales. “I was looking for surplus equipment and components for our robotics cells in-house. It keeps our costs down, making us more competitive.”

SurplusTrack.com primarily services the U.S. market, but is beginning to see an uptick in Canada and Southeast Asia.
