SAP ties together transportation management with xApp from Neoris

By Frank O Smith, senior contributing editor (fosmith@thewritinggroup.com) -- Manufacturing Business Technology, 3/1/2008

Neoris, a Latin American business and IT consulting firm and an SAP partner, recently redeveloped its Active Suite logistics execution applications as a composite xApp powered by SAP NetWeaver. It also added ActiveTrac, a new module for monitoring and enforcing logistics execution by enabling real-time tracking of vehicles and cargo while in transit.

ActiveSuite 6.0 works in tight synchronization with SAP Transportation Management (SAP TM) 6.0.

According to Lionel Carrasco, CTO for Neoris, although pre-configured to work seamlessly with SAP Transportation Management 6.0, Neoris Active Suite 6.0 can be used as a stand-alone component, or integrated with other solutions.

“Typically shippers lose visibility of their cargo once the container or vehicle leaves the premises, making it difficult to control events and ensure on-time, complete delivery of perfect orders,” says Lionel Carrasco, Neoris CTO. “If the driver picks up the wrong box, you may not learn about it until the end of the day when you get a report that the right order wasn't delivered. The cost of reversing the mistake after the fact is huge. With ActiveSuite, we can track trucks and cargo regardless of who is carrying them.”

ActiveTrac uses sensors and telemetry on the truck to monitor the status of cargo, including temperature, speed, direction, and location; and can report on whether routing and sequencing is being followed properly, making the status information available in real time to all stakeholders in the supply chain. The solution supports both active and passive RFID, and onboard GPS.

“SAP and Neoris integrated ActiveSuite as an embedded enhancement of SAP TM 6.0 for real-time visibility triggered by real assets in real time. [The solution allows planning] execution enforcement, and it generates preemptive alerts for events that could disrupt SAP logistics-intensive clients,” says Bernd Mosbrucker, a supply chain director with SAP AG.

Though pre-configured to work seamlessly with SAP TM 6.0, Active Suite 6.0 also can be used as a stand-alone component, or integrated with other solutions.
