Voice communication technologies gaining in-house control

By Staff -- Manufacturing Business Technology, 1/1/2005 12:00:00 AM

VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol)—i.e., getting your phone service over the Internet—is making significant corporate inroads, according to a survey by Scottsdale, Ariz.-based In-Stat/MDR. The percentage of companies using the technology has grown from 3 percent in 2003 to 12 percent in 2004.

The survey also found the bigger the company, the greater the chance it uses VoIP. At the end of 2004, predicted market penetration in large companies is 43 percent, and 34 percent for midsize companies.

The report, Business VoIP: An End-User's Perspective, 2004, notes most companies use a mix of technologies, not just VoIP. Furthermore, most users prefer a system with some LAN-based element—such as IP-PBX—thus giving them in-house control of the technology, rather than a totally outsourced solution—although that may change as VoIP use becomes more widespread.
