Infor introduces cross-platform Web service

By Staff -- Manufacturing Business Technology, 2/1/2007 12:00:00 AM MST

As part of the U.S. government's battle against terrorism, trade with several thousand named businesses, individuals, and organizations is prohibited by law. In principle, compliance is straightforward: before shipping an export order, check the consignee's name and address against a published list of "restricted parties."

In practice, life isn't that simple: separate lists are maintained by the U.S. State, Treasury, and Commerce Departments, and are updated frequently.

To facilitate matters, companies can subscribe to a restricted party screening service, such as the one offered by JP Morgan Chase Vastera, or adopt an international trade or transportation management solution with denied-party screening "bundled in"—such as that offered by Precision Software (recently acquired by QAD).

Infor has gone a step further by actually unbundling just such a denied-party screening capability—acquired as part of its purchase of SSA Global—and offering it as a real-time Web-based service called Infor Restricted Party Screening, The service is updated daily as government lists change.

The application also offers a complete audit trail and history of shipment screening, and enables batch screening of customer lists, employees, suppliers and vendors.

To Infor, breaking out the restricted-party screening capability makes clear sense. "We have 70,000 customers around the world, and on many application platforms. We wanted to offer restricted-party screening with some of the other applications that are part of our portfolio," says Eric Nilsson, an Infor VP.

Nor is the potential market limited to Infor users: accessed by Web services and APIs, any relevant application—from any vendor—can in theory link to the service.

"Rapid growth in outsourced manufacturing is triggering crossborder trade," notes Greg Aimi, a director at Boston-based AMR Research. "With this new trading environment comes increased regulatory requirements, and more complex global logistics. Technology is an important enabler of accuracy, accountability, and efficiency in managing these more challenging business processes."
