Open-source features for mobile computing line

Xybernaut Corp. announces a Linux operating system for its Atigo product family—a line of wearable computers designed for dual use as a wireless flat panel display or a stand-alone wireless-enabled mobile/wearable computer. This adds Linux as the third operating system option for the Atigo in addition to Microsoft Windows XP-Embedded and Microsoft CE.NET. The newest Linux Atigo products will incorporate various open-source features such as support for industry-standard communications protocols, advanced data management and system configuration features, and network management capabilities.

SUSE support; one server for multiple locations

Additions to the Veritas line of Linux products include SUSE Linux versions of the Veritas Foundation Suite, the Cluster Server, and OpForce. The Foundation Suite is a combination of the volume manager and file system. With the volume manager in place, users can deploy a single server and interface to handle disparate storage locations across a heterogeneous network, allowing them to spread data among machines regardless of what they are running. The file system offers journaling to minimize downtime after a system crash, along with the ability to resize components on-the-fly and make back-up snapshots.

Partnership gives Linux benefits to CRM customers

Siebel Systems and IBM have announced database support for Siebel's CRM suite on Linux. Siebel is working with IBM to extend support for Siebel 7.7 on DB2 Universal Database for Linux and provide support for Web Server and App Server tiers on future versions of Siebel CRM solutions in 2005. Enabling Siebel applications on DB2 Universal Database for Linux reinforces the commitment of both companies to an open source environment. Siebel 7.7 includes modules for sales, marketing, call center, service, analytics, and industry solutions.

Handheld computer offers batch data collection

Intermec Technologies' CK1 is an ergonomic, pocket-size, Linux-based handheld computer for batch data collection that is suitable for applications such as inventory management, order entry, parcel pickup and delivery, light industrial, and medical/pharmaceutical tracking systems. The system has a large display for easy viewing and the choice of an integrated laser bar-code scanner or linear imager. Its small size allows for single-handed operation, and an optional removable pistol-grip handle is available for scan-intensive applications. The combination of the Linux operating system and Linux programming tools provides end-user applications with multitasking capabilities.

Database sets performance record for non-clustered systems

Oracle set a world record TPC-C performance benchmark result for Oracle Database 10g running on Linux-based SMPs. Using a server with 32 Intel Itanium 2 processors at 1.5 GHz with 6 MB L3 cache running on Novell's SUSE LINUX Enterprise Server 9, Oracle Database 10g achieved 683,575 transactions per minute (tpmC) with a price-performance ratio of $5.99/tpmC. The database can be deployed on a range of systems, from small blade servers to large SMP servers and clusters of all sizes. It manages data from traditional business information to XML documents and spatial/location information, making it suitable for online transaction processing (OLTP); decision support; and content management applications. TPC-C is an OLTP benchmark developed by the Transaction Processing Performance Council.

Free database version for building, testing

Sybase ASE Express Edition for Linux is a free deployment version of the enterprise-class Linux database. With the system, users can build, test, and deploy new applications with no license fee. Express Edition not only is free for development purposes, but also can be deployed onto production systems. The system has no General Public License restrictions, nor complex licensing issues that might hinder developers. In addition, Express Edition removes the data migration barriers that occur when bringing deployment into a commercial database environment.

Stinger database software automates routine tasks

IBMannounces a new version of its database software for Linux and UNIX users. The DB2 Universal Database version 8.2, code-named Stinger, streamlines administrative tasks and lowers database operating costs. Its automation tools allow users to automate routine tasks and troubleshoot problems with more efficiency. Failover capabilities also have been spruced up for clustered database servers, which will be particularly effective when running on Linux server clusters. New features include the ability to automatically partition and optimize large databases on many servers.

Server marks step forward in Enterprise Linux

Novell's SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 9 includes performance, scalability, manageability, and security enhancements. Built on the new Linux 2.6 kernel, the server has integrated management capabilities, including support for ZENworks Linux Management, which allows operators to more easily deploy, configure, and update Linux servers. Kernel 2.6-based enhancements include advanced memory management and processor support, Native Posix Thread Library, and advanced I/O capabilities.
