Build, rather than buy, could be the answer to your bar-code label needs
Nearly half of the companies that install bar-code label software do some customization to meet specific business needs, according to VDC, a technology research and consulting firm based in Natick, Mass. The chief reasons for customization are desire for smooth integration with other applications—primarily ERP and warehouse management systems—and the need to keep up with constantly changing label standards. VDC expects this trend to continue with the number of in-house, custom-developed bar-code applications growing at 18 percent a year through 2007. VDC expects the market for off-the-shelf bar-code applications to grow 9 percent a year over the same period.
IBM and Microsoft join forces to promote Web services
For two years, Microsoft and IBM have been collaborating secretly on programs that incorporate Web services. In disclosing this fact, the companies said they hope to rally the industry around a common set of Web services standards. This marks the first open cooperation between these technology giants since Microsoft stopped working on IBM's OS2 operating system in favor of developing Windows.
