Smooth migration: Autodesk says users moving from 2D to 3D sparked Q4 revenue growth

Product life-cycle management (PLM) software vendor Autodesk credits users migrating from 2D to 3D design solutions, along with sales growth in international markets, for a 20-percent boost in revenue for its most recent fiscal quarters.
Autodesk reported revenues of $599 million for the fourth quarter of fiscal 2008—a 20-percent increase over the same period a year ago. Net income for the fourth quarter of 2008 was flat, however, at $96.5 million.
The company reported full-year 2008 net income of $356 million on revenues of 1.6 billion. The previous year’s income was 289 million on revenues of $1.4 billion.
Fourth-quarter revenue in the Americas grew just 2 percent year over year to $206 million, while revenue in Europe, Middle East, and Africa rose 38 percent to $262 million and in Asia Pacific increased 24 percent to $131 million.
All business units reported strong growth in the quarter. The design solutions segment reported revenue of $523 million, while sales at the platform solutions and emerging business division were $263 million The architecture engineering and construction division stood at $137 million while the manufacturing solutions division reported $123 million. The media and entertainment segment touched $71 million and the others segment reported $5 million.
Looking ahead, Autodesk said it estimates first-quarter 2009 revenue to be in the range of $575 million to $585 million. However, it reduced its GAAP earnings estimates of $0.35 to $0.37 per share for the first quarter from the previously announced $1.84 to $1.90 per share.
