RFID partnership protects tire makers, fleet managers from counterfeiting woes

Advanced ID Corp. is leveraging SkyeTek's reader technology to develop an asset tracking and authentication solution that protects tire manufacturers and fleet management companies against tire shrinkage and counterfeiting. These challenges are two of the industry's top issues, as they not only drive up the cost of distributing tires but also decrease vehicle fuel efficiency and reliability.
"Low cost solution devices and systems are expected to lead the way for migration to the era of tire RFID," said Dr. Patrick King, Global Electronics Strategist for Michelin. "This is particularly true for commercial tires and applications, and the publishing of global tire standards recently (AIAG B11, Tire and Wheel Data Standard and ISO 17367 Embedded RFID Standard) have helped to set the stage for adoption."
Advanced ID solves this problem with the help of SkyeTek by embedding RFID tags into tires allowing manufacturers and fleet operators to keep better track of inventory and authenticate tires to prevent counterfeiting. Advanced ID makes two UHF tire tags, the TT094/14-E and the TT094/14-I, and a full line of ruggedized handheld and stationary readers based on SkyeTek's M9 UHF SkyeModule. Also, Advanced ID's TireTRACS software captures and tracks data on tires as they move through distribution and are used by customers.
"Our tire tracking solution has been adopted by industry leaders in tire manufacturing, fleet management, and tire retreading," said Dan Finch, CEO of Advanced ID. "We are able to provide the market's leading tire management solution because of our intellectual property and help from technologically advanced partners like SkyeTek."
"Advanced ID is yet another innovative organization that we have partnered with to enable new applications for RFID technology," said Rob Balgley, CEO of SkyeTek. "Counterfeiting is a major threat to the tire industry and directly impacts consumers in a negative way, particularly during the summer months when the roads are busiest. Working with partners like Advanced ID enables us to help organizations leverage embedded RFID technology to help solve this problem before it gets worse."
