Trade exchanges-Web site portals that combine transactions, content, and services to optimize and automate buying, selling, and fulfillment. While hundreds of trade exchanges have been launched, the future prospects of independent, public exchanges remain murky. Viable exchanges are subsuming functionality that will facilitate much more than auctions, but rather the full range of transactions and content management need to optimize production and distribution coordination. Besides public exchanges, private trading hubs are being launched by individual companies, and in other cases, industry consortia, or groups of companies, are forming exchanges.
