RFID alert: this is no ordinary product demo

At the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation forum in Bangkok, U.S. Secretary of State Colin Powell electronically unlocked Savi Technology's SmartSeal sensor system device before government and industry leaders. The RFID-based system detects and alerts users whenever a cargo container has been tampered with, showing real-time information on the shipment's location. The system is at the core of a cargo security solution being deployed worldwide.
Avexus, whose Impresa system manages aftermarket services for companies that manufacture or maintain complex, high-value assets, recently closed $8.5 million in Series B funding led by Wall Street Technology Partners. A portion of the new funding will support collaborative efforts between Avexus and Pratt & Whitney Canada to develop an engine inspection and overhaul workbench.
Lockheed Martin Information Systems (LMIS), a leading supplier to the defense industry, signed a contract to deploy IFS's IFS Applications enterprise suite at two manufacturing sites. In addition, LMIS has formed a strategic alliance with IFS targeting a number of initiatives in the defense industry, including the F-16 Arms Program.
With the recent push for top suppliers and manufacturers to place Electronic Product Code (EPC)-compliant RFID smart labels on cases and pallets by January 1, 2005, Zebra Technologies and Acsis Inc. have joined up to help the CPG, retail, and pharmaceutical industry implement RFID technology. Zebra introduced a smart label "print-and-apply" engine supporting EPC, while Acsis introduced its RFID Readiness Program.
Sonata Software will implement and support RedPrairie's supply chain execution suite in India and other parts of Asia. A deployment is under way at Hindustan Lever, the Indian division of Unilever—RedPrairie's first implementation in India.
BigMachines reports it will market and sell salesforce.com software licenses for on-demand CRM to customers using or implementing BigMachines' Lean Front-End solution. BigMachines will offer Web services-based integration between it and salesforce.com's sales and contact management capabilities for strategic account and lead management.
Enterprise management vendor Visiprise is shipping Savvion's business process management system as an integral component of Visiprise Manufacturing. "Savvion allows us to provide manufacturers with a complete process automation and management environment to configure and track information within the context of the overall product life cycle," says Carter Johnson, VP of strategy and business development, Visiprise.
Telcommunications services giant Sprint and Cisco Systems, a provider of high-tech teleco gear, have launched their first "tailored" solution for a manufacturing vertical. Sprint Dealer Solutions is a communications infrastructure offering for dealer-automaker interactions.
