Tyco Electronics opts for Wi-Fi RFID-based asset tracking

By Manufacturing Business Technology Staff -- Manufacturing Business Technology, 2/29/2008 12:49:00 PM

An OATSystems Wi-Fi based RFID asset tracking solution is in use now to locate tractor trailers transporting electronic components between a large Tyco Electronics distribution center and manufacturing facilities in North Carolina.
Tyco ships myriad high-value electronic and fiber optic components to its customers to satisfy their tight production schedules. Tyco distribution centers function much like airline hubs, receiving parts from multiple origins and sending them to final destinations. Tyco selected OATSystems’ Asset Tracking solution to gain visibility into the locations of truckloads of high-value electronic components as they move between multiple facilities, and ensuring accurate proof-of-delivery. The solution uses Wi-Fi RFID tags made by Tyco Electronics' M/A-COM business using G2 Microsystems chips.
“OATSystems’ Asset Tracking solution, deployed on an existing Wi-Fi network, enabled us to benefit from a world-class presence-based asset tracking system quickly and cost-effectively,” says Randy Krull, director U.S. DC Operations for Tyco Electronics. “OAT also provides us the ability to expand into RTLS as well as leverage passive Gen2 tags, providing us a platform we can build upon to add more RFID solutions as our needs warrant.”
