Video products leader Sony links RFID and security video to cut shipment losses

Staff -- Manufacturing Business Technology, 7/23/2007 12:02:00 PM

Sony Europe is implementing an integrated RFID/video system to gain greater visibility and accountability of shipments of high-cost consumer electronics out of its major European distribution warehouse in The Netherlands. The system leverages Reva Systems Tag Acquisition Processor (TAP) technology to link tag containers with visual recordings of containers loaded for shipping as a means to improve shipping efficiency, reduce shrinkage, and streamline the reconciliation claims process.

“Sony integrated RFID reads of the item numbers of each carton projected onto the security film so you can see the data, the pallet ID, customer ID, and the individual items on the pallet, which leads to undisputed proof of delivery,” says Sander Merkx, a founding partner of Mieloo & Alexander, the Amsterdam system integrator in the project. “As a result, claims have dropped by 90 percent.”

Costs of the project, which took three months to implement, were largely offset by reductions in claims.
