NIST offers RFID adoption guidelines

By Manufacturing Business Technology Staff -- Manufacturing Business Technology, 8/2/2007 7:46:00 AM

The National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) has issued security guidelines and best practices for RFID adoption in response, in part, to meeting Congressional mandates requiring NIST to assist federal agencies in adequately securing IT systems.

“The report outlines security and privacy issues,” says Tom Karygiannis, senior NIST researcher. “You can use the report to see what you need to do given various applications of the technology, to determine what security and privacy controls are warranted. We have a section of checklists on best practices, from creating privacy policies to how to dispose of the tags. You have to do your homework to identity the risk, but once you do, we provide you with a list for what to do about them.”
