What do midsize manufacturers want?

An October 2005 AberdeenGroup benchmark survey report, ERP in the midmarket enterprise, looked at installations, uses, and future plans for enterprise resources planning (ERP) applications for midsize companies—i.e., those with less than $1 billion in revenues.
After cutting costs to the bone, the midmarket will, in 2006, look to the competitive need for technology, and move away from the typical mosaic of disparate point solutions.
Given the percentage of responding companies not planning on changing their solutions (see table), there is likely to be a fairly large amount of spending on core functionality in the coming year. In all cases, spending on upgrades of existing functionality will receive the bulk of investment. The greatest number of those not planning to acquire new business solutions—the majority in this survey—will seek integrated ERP solutions rather than stand-alone applications, even if they're considered best-of-breed.
Areas of greatest interest include customer relationship management, compliance management, and workflow—but not RFID.
