Demand for servers, storage, services grows at faster pace in process industries

By Staff -- Manufacturing Business Technology, 12/1/2005 12:00:00 AM

Companies engaged in process manufacturing are buying servers, storage, and associated services at a much faster clip than their counterparts in discrete industries, according to Framingham, Mass.-based IDC. As a whole, the U.S. server market is estimated to grow at a 4.8-percent compounded annual growth rate through 2008, reaching nearly $24 billion.

"There's a big push for professional services, especially in consulting, engineering, and software development," says Dan Corsetti, IDC senior analyst, vertical industry research. "That's the high-growth market in the U.S. Discrete manufacturing has been going through a rough patch lately—particularly in automotive—but it's a fairly mature market, with a lot of the storage consumption driven by ERP having already occurred. Where we do see storage consumption in discrete manufacturing is in the area of real-time decision support in supply chain management."

Growth in professional services requirements for servers through 2008 is anticipated to be 5.8 percent compounded annually. In discrete manufacturing, it will be only 1.5 percent, but in process, 4.9 percent. In the storage market, growth in professional services requirements will be 7.9 percent; in discrete, 4.3 percent; and in process, 6.9 percent.

"Process manufacturing is a much smaller overall market in the U.S., but in terms of overall adoption rate, it's healthier because it's not as mature a market," Corsetti says.
