Milwaukee-based Rockwell Automation announced in July the formation of its Global Manufacturing Solutions (GMS) group, which will bundle for customers its services and software in asset management, consulting and engineering, customer support, process solutions, software, and training.
The announcement reflects the trend among industrial automation software vendors to sell software and services in ways that allow manufacturers to take advantage of the vendors' domain expertise in providing solutions, as opposed to just products.
"Companies today are looking for overall solutions to improve their business processes," says Ron Wichter, senior vice president, Rockwell Automation GMS. "As we have been improving manufacturing operations for nearly a century, our people have a deep understanding of the unique challenges manufacturers face every day. Our comprehensive consulting, engineering support, training, and software solutions help companies maximize their operating potential."
The ground for the establishment of Rockwell GMS was prepared by several key acquisitions that Rockwell has made over the past year, including that of Systems Modeling, a developer of shop-floor scheduling, simulation, and modeling software; Entek, a provider of condition-based monitoring solutions; and certain batch management and execution application assets of Sequencia Corp. In addition, Rockwell formed a strategic alliance with enterprise asset management vendor MRO Software.
