Behind the Invensys/Microsoft partnership

"A huge vote of confidence," is how Leo Quinn, COO of Invensys Production Management, characterized Invensys' partnership with Microsoft. Announced at ISA in October, the three-year, nonexclusive alliance centers on ArchestrA, Invensys' software framework for plant automation and integration. The alliance, which was six months in the making, aims to more strongly link ArchestrA with Microsoft technologies, and accelerate the delivery of solutions that improve the real-time exchange of data in a production environment. Using what Quinn calls pre-established "lighthouse" accounts, initially the companies will focus on the hydrocarbons market, and later the power & utilities, food & beverage, and pharmaceutical markets. The companies will engage in joint marketing, sales, and training activities, but Don Richardson, director of manufacturing industry solutions for Microsoft, told MSI that rather than pushing Invensys solutions over others, Microsoft salespeople mainly will be called in to convince companies of the strengths of Microsoft technologies—such as the SQL Server database—in plant settings.
