RFID compliance addition to European retailer’s contracts

By Manufacturing Business Technology Staff -- Manufacturing Business Technology, 10/30/2007 12:00:00 AM MDT

METRO Group, a Germany-based international retailing organization, will begin making RFID compliance part of supplier contract negotiations by year’s end.
“They’ve spent a lot of money developing RFID for Europe and are confident the technology is ready to go in the European market,” says Jonathan Collins, senior analyst with Oyster Bay, N.Y.-based ABI Research. “They’re the first in Europe to make it part of annual contracts.”
Collins says METRO isn’t terming the cost of noncompliance as penalties, but that the incurred cost “will be handed back to the supplier as a disincentive; suppliers need to get back onboard.”
