PeopleSoft buying binge continues with focus on the lean enterprise

Dave Turbide, MSI columnist -- Manufacturing Business Technology, 12/1/2003 7:00:00 AM

PeopleSoft has in its sights a vision of the "demand-driven enterprise,"—i.e., companies equipped with enterprise functionality that delivers greater responsiveness to changing customer demand and producing only what's needed, when it's needed. Realization of that vision took a step forward with the recently announced acquisition of Demand Flow software from JCIT International.

JCIT, formerly known as the John Costanza Institute of Technology, originally developed Demand Flow software to provide appropriate IT support for enabling mixed-model flow manufacturing.

"We knew our customers needed a solution beyond mere pilot programs and spreadsheets. They needed to formalize the demand-driven enterprise with a robust software tool," says Tony Gorski, COO of JCIT.

Both companies believe that Demand Flow, as a lean enterprise solution, combined with PeopleSoft's supply chain solutions, will support manufacturers looking to improve agility, reduce inventory levels, and eliminate waste.

Gorski explains, "Disruptive technologies such as the Internet have forced manufacturers to think differently. Lean manufacturing always had a void in the formalization process. We want to fill that gap with this partnership."

Demand Flow is particularly attractive to manufacturers of high-tech, medical, consumer, and industrial products that face dramatic changes in mix and volume on a daily basis.

Demand Flow software will be integrated with the PeopleSoft Enterprise system, PeopleSoft Enterprise One, and PeopleSoft Enterprise World (the latter two being J.D. Edwards software products). JCIT, meanwhile, will continue to carry out its mission outside of the software arena.
