Ariba takes aim at value chains

Ariba had no acquisition to announce at its event in New York Feb. 28, but it did have a major message to deliver: its vision for delivering collaborative commerce functionality. The Mountain View, Calif.-based software company, fresh off its Jan. 29 announcement that it will acquire Agile Software, a San Jose, Calif.-based collaborative product commerce (CPC) vendor, laid out in detail how Agile's CPC capabilities, along with Ariba's strategic sourcing functionality, support what it calls value chain management.
This expanded applications platform, say Ariba executives, takes the company beyond its roots in indirect materials e-procurement, and enable OEMs, suppliers, and contract manufacturers to form value chains.
"Our focus is on value chain management," says Larry Mueller, Ariba's president and COO. "Future competitive advantage will come from being able to drive inter-enterprise process improvements."
Ariba announced three new alliances at the New York event. These include one with Syncra, Waltham, Mass., to offer collaborative forecasting and replenishment functions; with SeeCommerce, Palo Alto, Calif., to offer SeeCommerce's supply chain performance management solution; and with New York-based Zeborg, to support e-procurement analysis.
