World-class manufacturing performance excellence in India was showcased last December at the first-ever India Manufacturing Excellence Awards (IMEA), held in Mumbai and sponsored by global consulting firm Frost & Sullivan. Awards were presented to top manufacturers selected from more than 120 entrants.
Cosponsored by Microsoft, Ramco Systems, and Rockwell Automation, the awards recognize "Indian manufacturing capability and assess its global competitiveness." Companies were evaluated on—among other factors—quality systems, equipment uptime, operational flexibility, and customer focus. Consideration also was given to bar-code usage, lean production, layout design, and labor and change management.
New Delhi-based vehicle manufacturer Tata Motors Limited and Moser Baer, a manufacturer of optical storage media, received the top honors for overall excellence. Tata also received the Frost & Sullivan-Rockwell Excellence in Automation, a special jury award.
Wipro Infotech, a leading computer manufacturer based in Bangalore, won a Gold Award in the Emerging Enterprises division.
According to Anil Jain, general manager of Wipro Infotech's personal computing business, "The award not only brings notice to the good work that has been done by Wipro Infotech in the past, but also the responsibility of continuing to do the same in the future to better serve customers."
