BEIJING (AP) — Chinese steel mills and mobile phone factories are being idled and thousands of homes in one area are doing without electricity as local governments order power cuts to meet energy-saving targets set by Beijing. Rolling blackouts and enforced power cuts are affecting key industrial areas.

Kia CEO Resigns After 100,000 Vehicles Recalled

SEOUL, South Korea (AP) — The top executive at Kia Motors has resigned after the company recalled more than 100,000 vehicles worldwide over defective wiring, the automaker said Tuesday. Chung Sung-eun, vice chairman and CEO of South Korea's No. 2 automaker, stepped down on Friday, according to company spokesman Michael Choo.

Labor Secretary: Obama Is Helping The Economy

WASHINGTON (AP) — Labor Secretary Hilda Solis is defending President Barack Obama's efforts to combat the recession and unemployment, saying his focus has been on helping the jobless and underemployed. In a Labor Day appearance on ABC News' "Good Morning America," Solis said Obama is doing a good job.

Motorola, LM Ericsson AB Ink Wireless Partnership

SCHAUMBURG, Ill. (AP) — Motorola Inc. said Tuesday that it is partnering with LM Ericsson AB, the Swedish maker of telecommunications equipment, to develop public-safety radio equipment using the latest technology for wireless broadband. The partnership will help Motorola create public-safety communications equipment that could be used to relay video wirelessly from the scene of accidents, Ericsson said.

LONDON (AP) — The chief of the U.N.'s telecommunications agency urged the Canadian manufacturer of the BlackBerry to allow law enforcement agencies access to customer data, saying that governments all over the world had legitimate security concerns which should not be ignored. The International Telecommunication Union agency's Secretary-General Hamadoun Toure said that all governments engaged in the fight against terrorism had the right to demand access to users' information from the maker of the BlackBerry — Research in Motion Ltd.
