U.S. Loses 95,000 Jobs Because Of Government Layoffs

WASHINGTON (AP) — A wave of government layoffs in September outpaced weak hiring in the private sector, pushing down the nation's payrolls by a net total of 95,000 jobs. The unemployment rate held at 9.6 percent last month, the Labor Department said Friday. The jobless rate has now topped 9.

Boeing Secures $12.4M Deal To Work On Air Force B-52 Computers

WASHINGTON (AP) — Boeing Co. has received a $12.4 million contract from the U.S. Air Force to work on computer systems on the B-52, the Defense Department said Wednesday. The contract calls for Boeing to work on future beyond line of sight communication capability for terminals on the B-52.

NEW YORK (AP) — Shares of Adobe soared in heavy trading Thursday on a report that Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer discussed a possible buyout of the company. A report posted in the "Bits" blog of The New York Times said Ballmer recently met with Adobe CEO Shantanu Narayen to talk about Apple's control of the cell phone market and how Microsoft and Adobe could work together to fend off the iPhone maker.

SHANGHAI (AP) — China is not using its control over supplies of rare earth — exotic metals crucial in advanced manufacturing — as a diplomatic "bargaining chip," state media quoted Premier Wen Jiabao as saying during a visit to Europe. Recent reports that Beijing had temporarily suspended shipments to Japan of the metallic elements, used in computer disk drives, hybrid car components and other high-tech products, has drawn attention to China's near monopoly on the materials.

Siemens Lands $1.1B Deal To Build High-Speed Trains

LONDON (AP) — Eurostar International Ltd., which operates high-speed trains between London and the European continent, said Thursday it will buy 10 new trains from German manufacturer Siemens in a 700- million-pound ($1.1-billion) program to upgrade and expand its fleet. Eurostar said the new 900-passenger trains would be capable of operating anywhere on Europe's high-speed rail network, as the company looks beyond its current destinations of London, Paris and Brussels.

BOSTON (AP) — Johnson & Johnson on Thursday asked a federal judge to dismiss a complaint accusing the health care giant of paying millions in kickbacks so nursing homes would put more patients on its popular schizophrenia medication and other drugs. Job Openings Rise For Second Straight Month

WASHINGTON (AP) — Job openings rose in August for the second straight month and layoffs dropped sharply, evidence that the job market is slowly healing. The number of jobs advertised rose nearly 2 percent, to 3.2 million, the Labor Department said Thursday. That's the highest level since April, when temporary census hiring inflated that month's figure.
