Harman Invests $100 Million In China Operations

NEW YORK (AP) -- Global audio and entertainment products maker Harman International Industries Inc. said Monday it plans to invest $100 million to boost its manufacturing and research capabilities in China. The company invested $75 million to start up its manufacturing and research operations in Shanghai, Suzhou and Shenzhen between 2007 and 2008.

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — Google Inc. is tightening its privacy leash on employees in an effort to ensure they don't intrude on people while the Internet search leader collects and stores information about its users. Besides promoting longtime employee Alma Whitten to be its director of privacy, Google said Friday that it will require all 23,000 of its employees to undergo privacy training.

Tax Firm Is Being Investigated Over BAE Systems Audits

LONDON (AP) — Audit, tax and advisory firm KPMG LLP is being investigated by British regulators over audits it carried out for arms manufacturer BAE Systems PLC. The Accountancy and Actuarial Discipline Board said Tuesday it was looking into commissions paid by BAE and also "professional advice, consultancy and tax work" carried out by KPMG between 1997 and 2007.

Ford To Invest $850M In Fuel-Efficient Vehicles

DETROIT (AP) — Ford Motor Co. will invest $850 million between 2011 and 2013 to develop and build more fuel-efficient vehicles. The automaker said Monday it will invest the money in Michigan, where unemployment is 13 percent. Ford said it will expand its manufacturing and engineering operations, supporting up to 1,200 new jobs.

U.S. Steel Posts $51M Loss In 3Q

PITTSBURGH (AP) — U.S. Steel said Tuesday it continues to lose money because demand for its products remains weak due to the uneven global economic recovery. The Pittsburgh manufacturing giant reported a third-quarter loss of $51 million. In late July the company was predicting a profit for the quarter, but it tempered that outlook as the period progressed.

Ford To Hire 1,200 Michigan Workers By 2013

DEARBORN, Mich. (AP) — Ford Motor Co. said Monday it will hire 1,200 new workers in Michigan by 2013 if the state approves tax incentives. Ford plans to invest $850 million in several Detroit-area plants to build its new six-speed transmissions. The company also will hire 900 hourly manufacturing workers and 300 engineers and other salaried workers.

Top line growth will require a different kind of plan that should be developed in parallel with any process improvement projects. If not, the company will get to the end of its lean journey with plenty of new capacity and no new sales. Several years ago I was doing a seminar in Orlando on growth planning.
